What we, the Modesto Residents, love about our program

Residents can participate in a full spectrum of training opportunities.
  • The Call Schedule: Every 4th night 5 months of the year, on Medicine and OB, Every 7th night otherwise. Attending and 3rd year Back-Up available at all times.
  • Night Call is only until 8 pm except Fridays and Saturdays. We cover Night Float as a 2nd year.
  • Family Medicine Clinic: We treat the underserved, approx 30-50% Spanish Speaking (depending on our own ability to speak Spanish). We each have our own medical assistant while in clinic. There is no clinic post-call. Patients per half day as a 1st year:5-8, 2nd year:8-11, 3rd year:11-15.
  • Our Hospital: Doctors Medical Center of Modesto – great supportive social services, discharge planning, pristine modern facilities to give our underserved patients the best care in a private hospital setting (this is through a contract the County has with the hospital). Electronic Medical Records, fly-alongs with the hospital's life-flight helicopter that brings patients in from Yosemite & other areas. Ample free parking in doctor's lot, private rooms with cable TV.
  • The Learning: We have great interactions with our Attendings, many of whom graduated from our program in the past. We have a weekly half-day of lecture session where we all come together for learning.
  • This is an unopposed program so we cover everything. ICU is part of our Medicine rotation. ACLS, NRP, ALSO courses provided by the program.
  • The Food: Gourmet meals prepared by a private chef every lunch for doctors in our lounge. Food in the cafeteria is free at all times.
  • Obstetrics: 15-20 vaginal deliveries per month of OB, with similar number of C-section assists. We do High Risk OB with Obstetricians and Low Risk with Family Medicine Attendings. We have beautiful Labor and Delivery Suites.
  • Procedures: Learning any procedure is open to any of us (especially if we hang out in the E.R. a lot), however, we all do Circs, Radial Art Lines, Central Lines, Intubations, Colposcopy, Vasectomy, Bilateral Tubal Ligations, joint injections, paracentesis, thoracentesis, LP's, Flex Sig, Skin Biopsies, toenail removals, etc, based on interest and necessity.
  • Cost of Living: comfortable 2 bedroom house for $1000/month rent or $250,000 to buy. Salary is competitive with full health care benefits for resident and family. Lots of job opportunities in the area.
  • The Residents: We are a big family, we get together at least once a week to hang out. Average age: 29, 2/3 married, 1/3 single.
  • Perks: $1000 move in grant. Graduated education allowance (PGY1: $1100, PGY-2: $1200, PGY-3: $1300), our Medical License is paid for. We have 12 paid holidays per year, if you happen to be on call that day, you enjoy a day off at another time. Two personal days per year. 6 weeks elective away with International rotations encouraged. 4 weeks vacation per year.
  • Extracurriculars: We organize a Fun Run 5k/10k/1mile, Salsa dancing with Pediatric Attendings, residency socials, and yearly hike up Half-Dome in Yosemite.
